A long process of deindustrialisation has been shaping the \ncities in the world following different patterns: the processes of \ndelocalization, fragmentations, tertiarization in old industrial regions\n have been extensively studied. However, deindustrialisation has been \nlargely acknowledged as a global phenomenon as shown, for instance, by \nthe debate on premature deindustrialization.
In many regions, \nfactories have abandoned the urban space, often creating large urban \nvoids which have been representing both problems and opportunities for \ncities, and which have been shaping the urban agenda for a long time \nnow.
Urban voids make deindustrialization clearly perceivable, but \neven in the strongest of \u201cpost-industrial\u201d evolutions, fragments of \nmanufacturing remain embedded in the urban thread. Moreover, along with \ninteresting cases of reshoring, new forms of manufacturing, based on new\n digital technologies, have recently begun to emerge and are gradually \nregaining the urban space.
The availability of tools like additive \nmanufacturing (3D printing), big data analytics and advanced algorithms,\n Internet of Things (IoT) platforms, and, in general, digital \ntechnologies, has created new possibilities for manufacturing and has \nreshaped the relationship with the cities: while the old factories \nchallenged the cities with noise, smog and pollution, the new ones are \nclean, small and noiseless. They are both sustainable and potentially \ninvisible. They are more integrated with cultural and service economies,\n and often lead to an increasing blurring of sectoral boundaries. They \nare embedded in the urban structure from an economic, social and \nmorphological point of view: urban manufacturing may involve craft \nactivities, industrial prototyping, art and design activities as well as\n the so-called digital manufacturing. All address \u201curban\u201d market niches \nand use urban spaces in a new way.
Within the urban studies, the link\n between the city and its productive plants has been largely \ninvestigated in the past, when manufacturing production was a key \neconomic driver for the urban society; this session focuses on the field\n of urban manufacturing within the contemporary \u201cpost-industrial\u201d \nsociety, a topic that the urban studies research has not discussed very \nmuch. Not only is the empirical knowledge about it scarce (with notable \nexception), but also the analytical categories used in the past are no \nlonger (or not always) useful to grasp the mechanisms at play (for \ninstance, the relation between manufacturing activities and local \nemployment rate is certainly different from the past).
In this \nsession, we want to collect both theoretical and empirical contributions\n shedding light to the relation between manufacturing and the urban \nspace. We are interested in the different facets of such relation, \nranging from detailed descriptions of the phenomenon to theoretical \ndiscussions aiming at providing analytical tools for exploring it. The \nsession will welcome papers discussing, for example (but not limited \nto), the following topics:
What has changed: which manufacturing \nactivities have left the city? Which have stayed? Which are the new \nones? Why? What are the prospects for those who are located within the \nurban landscape? What are the risks? What are the opportunities?
A \nfocus on the productive and organisational aspects of the urban \nmanufacturing: how \u201cnew\u201d is the new urban manufacturing? Does it exploit\n new technologies? New organisational structures? Or are they \n\u201clow-tech\u201d, more traditional craft manufacturing industries?
The \nrelation with the urban environment: How do these firms connect with the\n urban space? Do they integrate with it (acting also as agents of urban \nrequalification), or, conversely, do they represent, as often in the \npast, an abrupt break in the urban tissue? How is urban manufacturing \nsensed in the urban space? How much noise, smell, image of the factories\n is perceived in the city?
How do cities (their governments, but also\n any other institutions, lobbies, stakeholders, \u2026) respond to the \nchanging industrial dynamics? Does the deindustrialisation narrative \ninform local development strategies, or are local governments developing\n specific policies in order to strengthen the urban manufacturing? What \nkind of idea of urban manufacturing circulates within local policies?
Which\n effects on the urban social structure does contemporary urban \nmanufacturing bring about? Is it reinforcing inequalities, does it \ngenerate new ones? Or does it rather represent a tool able to reconnect \nthe working and middle classes with the urban society?
